Breastfeeding promotion (BAWER project)

Food security and Nutrition promotion

What Breastfeeding promotion (BAWER project)
Why

Sub-optimal breastfeeding is one of the key risk factors for illness, deaths and DALYs (Disability Adjusted Life Years) for children under five years. According to the 2022 Uganda demographic and health survey (UDHS), the national infant mortality rate is 36 deaths per 1000 live births compared to the 43 in the past. The national under-five mortality rate is now 52 deaths per 1000 live births compared to 64 in the past (UBOS 2023). Despite the improvements, a lot is still to be desired to in order to keep the decline in momentum. The nutritional status of children under 5 is at 24.4% yet those who are stunted are 9.7% (UBOS 2023).

Promotion of breastfeeding is one of the nutrition specific interventions that lay the foundation for nutrition and immunity status for children under five years. More so, better nutrition is related to improved child health, stronger immune systems, safer pregnancy, child birth and lower risk of NCDs and longevity. This is in line with the health strategy to improve nutrition status of the population especially the young children and women of reproductive age (Vision 2040)

We are currently fostering optimal breastfeeding and nutrition education to mothers of children less than five years to reduce risk for morbidity and mortality with particular attention to the first 1000 days window of opportunity at the different public health facilities in Wakiso district.

We are currently seeking funds for the breastfeed and wean right (BAWER) project – the health and social protection project for Kampala slums targeting vulnerable pregnant and breastfeeding women and their children.

Where
At health facilities waiting areas; first we used to deliver the service at Kawempe National Referral Hospital and now at Kira HCIII, Kira Municipality, Wakiso District (on-going)

When and who

  • Mothers attending the routine antenatal care to boast the breastfeeding intention
  • Mothers who have just delivered to improve the breastfeeding self-efficacy
  • Mothers attending the young child clinic (YCC) to troubleshoot any impediments to breast feeding as well as the art of introducing complementary foods and prolonging the breastfeeding intention to 2 years.

How
Health literacy and education using Interactive sessions where women share experiences (peer counselling – peer to peer sharing) and ask questions about breastfeeding, complementary feeding and other health related concerns.
